E-mail as secure as any other mail at Aftenposten

E-mail has long been business-critical for Aftenposten. Downtime means loss of income from the very first minute. This is why they have chosen – with the expert assistance of Proact – to secure their e-mail and data with the best solution on the market: Symantec Enterprise Vault and NetBackup. This in turn has led to better service for users, fewer helpdesk enquiries and more efficient use of the organisation’s storage resources.

Aftenposten IT is a “company” within the company and supplies IT services to more than 20 Schibsted-owned enterprises. One of the biggest is FINN.no, which with its 200 employees has become a major moneyspinner. The IT section is commercially independent and makes its own contributions to the collective kitty. The IT section has around 80 man-year equivalents, of which around half are responsible for operations while the others work with administration and development.

“E-mail has become a production-critical component of our business and a very important communication channel in our production flow,” says Espen Dahl, departmental manager for IT operations and user support. “Like other companies, e-mail has become crucially vital to us. Many of our businesses will be paralysed if our e-mail system goes down. Quite simply, we cannot afford to have specific problems with it. This was why it was crucial to get our e-mail administration in order.”

“Before we started working with Proact and had Enterprise Vault installed, we had realised for a long time that the volume of e-mail to be stored was increasing massively. We were also concerned to see that users were starting to set up their own personal archive systems. As time went on, this became difficult and time-consuming for the IT department to handle. Things were constantly being destroyed or deleted, and inboxes and disks were filling up. This also irritated users, leading many of them to seek assistance from the helpdesk. Eventually, the situation became pretty complex and hard to manage, and when systems become big and heavy it is difficult to get them back up and running again when anything goes wrong. Another challenge we faced was the growth in the archiving of old e-mail. Secondary storage media, which are cheaper, were just one of our requirements.”

Enterprise Vault stood out

“In other words, we had to do something about the situation, and we chose to go for a central archiving system which can handle our entire IT environment. After having taken a good look at what was available on the market, talking to other companies with similar experience and assessing the advice given by the analysis companies, we eventually decided to invest in Enterprise Vault. It turned out that Enterprise Vault stood head and shoulders above the rest, so our decision was not really all that difficult to make in the end,” says Dahl.
