Just a few years ago, only 41% of major Finnish organisations and enterprises reported that they utilise virtualisation. Now, that figure has risen above 68%. The public utility Oulun Tietotekniikka (OTT) has also joined this group: It provides workstation virtualisation with Proact and VMware solutions.
The story in the background is nothing trivial but consolidation of neighbouring municipalities with Oulu. In 2013 Haukipudas, Kiiminki, Oulu, Oulunsalo and Yli-Ii will form a consolidation of multiple municipalities with Oulu. The new Oulu municipality will be established 01.01.2013.
Before all this, however, the preparations will jump the gun. The consolidating municipalities will be supplied with IT services according to the requirements of the new Oulu municipalities in late 2011. Workstation and server virtualisation solutions will be utilised for this purpose.
Proact was selected because of superior expertise and unrivalled price-quality ratio.
“Strong expertise in VMware virtualisation solutions and ability to compete with price in the bid comparison clinched the race for Proact. We received a high-quality and reliable partner, which was more than critical for the success of the project,” smiles System Manager Marko Niskala of OTT.
“We will provide OTT with the VMware View Premier workstation virtualisation solution. With it, the Windows desktop is provided over the network as a service independent of the user's terminal and location. It is a feature beyond compare,” says Sales Manager Kimmo Nurmivuori of Proact.
“The service is provided from a private cloud located in our own data centre. It has been built using VMware vSphere server virtualisation technology together with robust server and storage systems,” continues OTT’s Niskala. The project is significant also economically.
“This is a four-year framework arrangement, the value of which during the contract period is approximately 1.2 million euros,” says Niskala. According to Marko Niskala, the project is now in its implementation stage. The most critical moment will be at the end of the year, when users switch to using virtual workstations.
