Tatra Trucks was struggling to incorporate effective data backup processes as its environment comprised of virtual servers on both VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V platforms. The firm’s operating systems redominantly used Microsoft Windows and Oracle databases with Microsoft SQL.
As the infrastructure at Tatra Trucks used technologies from a variety of vendors, the vehicle manufacturer sought an expert partner who had experience and advanced knowledge across all platforms. Tatra Trucks chose us for a variety of reasons. Not only can we draw on skills from across the wider Proact Group, but
we also have a large number of accreditations and partnerships with world-leading enterprise-class technology companies.
Our technical specialists designed a platform, based on Veeam backup software, that was a perfect fit for TATRA TRUCK’s goals and existing IT infrastructure. Our solution was based on a Backup-to-Disk-to-Tape (B2D2T) process with a dedicated disk system, just for backups, and a tape library. All the virtual machines in the VMware and Hyper-V virtual environment allow Tatra Trucks to achieve a high level of granularity. The capability to restore a single mail in the MS Exchange Server has been particularly well received by the IT team.
Although the Veeam backup solution offers a variety of performance and reliability benefits, we’ve also used internal tools belonging to the Oracle and MS SQL database platforms. Scripts start in SharePoint and then the Veeam software backs up the outputs from these internal tools and scripts when scheduled. In addition,
we’re also testing using Veeam licences to backup individual workstations. “The quality of the delivered solution has confirmed that we made the right choice in selecting Proact.
The company‘s specialists are amongst the top experts in their industry. Issues always emerge during implementation but these have been resolved quickly and reliably,” said Pavel Očkovič, Head of IT at Tatra Trucks. “Selecting the most suitable technology doesn’t mean you’re done; you have to select specialists who can use the technology and understand it, and it goes without saying that Proact and its specialists do both,” Očkovič continued.
The solution used a two-stage backup process, with the most recent data backups being stored on disk space so they can be restored very quickly if required. Long-term backups are stored on tapes and all backup operations adhere to Tatra Trucks’ strict data retention policies.
To ensure that the solution was successful, we tested it thoroughly following the implementation. The IT service provider also trained Tatra Truck’s staff, to ensure they get the most out of this proven technology.
Let’s start something great together!
