Hjälp oss skapa en ljusare framtid i jul – och framöver (in English)

Christmas is a time for kids and for giving. And this festive season (and into the new year) we’re supporting the FIRST LEGO League.

FIRST is a charity that inspires young people’s interest and participation in science and technology, and motivates them to pursue education and careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Our donations will support the FIRST LEGO League. This initiative is delivered across the world by operational partners. In the UK and Ireland, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) runs all three FIRST LEGO League programmes. Each programme is designed for different ages: Discovery for 4 – 6 year olds, FIRST LEGO League Jr. for 6 – 9 year olds, and FIRST LEGO League for 9 – 16 year olds.

These international competitions challenge kids to think like scientists and engineers. Guided by coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem and are tasked with coming up with a solution.

So far, over 320,000 young people have taken part in the FIRST LEGO League. They’ve built more than 40,000 robots, at 1,450 events, in 98 countries. And the Jr. programmes have reached a further 126,000 children.

Into Orbit

This is the league’s 30th season and this year’s theme is ‘Into Orbit’. As the name suggests, teams will build, test and program an autonomous LEGO Mindstorm robot to complete tasks in Space.

These missions range from delivering a payload down a ramp, to crossing a crater or arranging solar panels so that they all face the same direction. And the robot built by each team must be able to accomplish one or more of these tasks autonomously within the time limit.

The children can also discover the real-world challenges that lie behind the tasks they face – and in doing so learn what it takes to live on a space station or travel to another planet, for example. Working in teams to solve these problems, it’s easy to see how FIRST LEGO League could provide a training ground for the innovators of the future.

Looking ahead

Of course, we’re not taking anyone to Mars here at Proact but every single day we combine human ingenuity and technology to help solve our customers’ problems, overcome their challenges and enable them to succeed in their goals.

And who knows, maybe we’ll be lucky enough to be able to work with one of the FIRST LEGO League’s participants one day.

On a final note we want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we look forward to whatever 2019 has in store.
